Job Cuts At FAANG Leave H1B Worker ‘Worried’ For His Family’s Future In US

Many employees today are concerned because major companies, including top tech giants, are laying off workers. Recently, a Reddit user working in the US at one of the FAANG companies, Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix or Google, shared a troubling experience. The user claimed that he is “being forced to return to India” and still on an H1B visa. What worries him the most is his family’s future, especially the two children. Both kids have grown up in the US, so the thought of moving back to India is stressful for the whole family.

The individual explained, “I am currently in the US working for a FAANG company, but there is a very high probability that my role will be eliminated in the next couple of months and I am still on H1B. I am worried that it will be very difficult to get another job in the short term, given the state of the job market and it is stressing me out a lot. I am married with 2 kids, the first one is in high school and the second one is still in elementary. I am very much worried for my elder one as both my kids have lived all their life in the US. The elder kid wasn’t born in the US and we moved to the US when he was just a few months old. We will be moving back to Bengaluru as that’s where our roots are.”

Reacting to the post, a user wrote, “You need to have an open conversation about their legal status and prepare kids for the upcoming changes in life. Worrying is not going to change anything. Cheeto’s immigration policies are only going to get much worse for H1b.”

Another shared, “I moved back. The kids are doing really well. I don’t think that’s a problem. The real issue is in finding work here and adjusting to the work culture. Another issue is adjusting to the quality of life.”

“You sound like a good parent. Your kids will be fine no matter where you live,” a comment read.

An individual stated, “If I were you, I would start looking for a new job right away and at the same time, I would start making the elder kid prepared mentally to move to India. I would also start researching about securing admission in an International school in Bangalore. Hopefully, you saved/invested enough to not worry about your expenses for a few years. Being on a dependent visa, your elder kid’s life is going to get worse because of visa issues, even if he secures a college admission in the US. Just try to think about positives.”

Another mentioned, “I am sure you are on H1B, so you and your spouse are mostly born and brought up in India. Limited resources and opportunities during your time, you did so well. You need to believe in your kids that they will do better with the kind of opportunities there are now and the support they will get from their parents. Look for positives and prepare for it so life in India becomes easier.”

One more added, “Kids are supposed to learn to adapt and they’re quite resilient. The world ain’t fair and the sooner they learn this, the better.”

As per TechCrunch reports, April recorded the highest number of layoffs in the tech sector, as nearly 23,400 employees lost their jobs. In March, around 8834 people were laid off. February saw 16,234 job cuts, while January had the lowest number, as 2403 employees were affected.
