An employee shared on Reddit how being laid off turned their world upside down but led to their dream job and hope. They worked for a 125 year old company that made most of its money from the public school system. When several school districts decided not to build new facilities.
Sudden Layoff and Emotional Struggle
“I received an email at 2 pm saying there is going to be a layoff at 6 pm and affected members will get an email. I worked with my boss until 4:45 pm who scheduled a follow-up meeting the next week which gave me some hope. At 6:05 pm, like clockwork I received the dreaded email to meet the next day at 11 am,” the user wrote.
The hours leading up to the meeting were devastating. “Those hours until 11 am were the worst. I felt physical pain in my chest. I was worried I’d collapse. I couldn’t help but contemplate killing myself. I felt relief right after the meeting though. I knew the decision was taken and I had to deal with it,” the post continued.
From Rock Bottom to a Dream Job
The user described two months of uncertainty, with countless interviews and repeated challenges linked to their visa status. “I had 3 more weeks to figure it all out and I would be out of the country if not. I got an interview for a dream job. I decided to put all eggs in one basket.”
After two weeks of rigorous preparation, their persistence paid off. “And guess what? It all worked out. I got a job that would pay 210% of my last pay. They are very supportive of my immigration status too. If I can, you can do it too! Stay strong, hang in there. Hard work will always give results! Godspeed on your layoff journey!!!”
The story has resonated widely online, inspiring others facing layoffs to persevere through uncertainty.
