‘Waste of time, money and effort’: Bengaluru candidate drives 25 km for interview, finds process misleading, walks out

Reddit user has shared their frustrating experience of attending a face-to-face interview in Bengaluru, only to walk out after feeling their time was not respected. The candidate was scheduled for an interview at 4:30 pm for the role of Head of Web Development at a medium-sized digital marketing firm in Marathahalli.

Expectations vs Reality

According to the post, HR had confirmed that this would be the only round, directly with the CEO, and that the candidate was the only one scheduled for the day. The invite also asked for two printed resumes and a laptop. “So, I drove all the way from my home to Marathahalli, about 25 km away, through Bangalore traffic, and reached their office at 4:25pm sharp,” the user wrote.

The candidate said HR asked if they had brought a resume, and since they hadn’t, it was printed at the office. They waited until 5 pm and met another applicant who had been waiting since 2:30 pm for his turn with the CEO.

A Change in Process

When the user inquired about the delay, HR told them to wait another five minutes as the “tech guy” was busy. The user added, “I was surprised and asked her again, ‘Isn’t the interview supposed to be directly with the CEO?’ That’s when she said the first round would be with the tech guy, followed by the CEO. This had never been mentioned earlier.”

By 5:20 pm, the candidate decided to leave. “Finally, at 5:20 pm, I made an excuse that I had another interview, requested to reschedule, and walked out. I felt it wasn’t even worth interviewing at a company that doesn’t value others’ time, let alone working for them.”

Outdated Hiring Practices

The Reddit post criticised the firm’s lack of efficiency, pointing out that remote interviews are the norm today. “I can’t believe companies are still stuck in 2015 in this era of remote and hybrid work. It seems like they’ve never heard of online interviews. Honestly, it felt like one of those ‘meetings that should have just been an email.’ This could have easily been a 30-minute online interview,” the user wrote.

The candidate called it a complete “waste of time, money, and effort,” sparking discussion online about outdated hiring practices that ignore the convenience of modern interview methods.
