Indonesia ministries collaborate to create 1.2 million new jobs

Indonesia’s Ministry of Creative Economy, in collaboration with the Coordinating Ministry for Community Empowerment, has set a target of generating 1.2 million new jobs in the creative economy sector during 2025–2029. The initiative builds on existing sectoral strength, with Statistics Indonesia (BPS) reporting 26.5 million workers employed in the sector in 2024. The government expects this figure to rise to 27.7 million by 2029.

Minister of Creative Economy Teuku Riefky Harsya stated that the strategy focuses on strengthening professionalism across creative subsectors, fostering entrepreneurship, and linking sector outputs to wider economic opportunities. Collaboration with multiple ministries is central to the plan, including joint programmes with the Ministry of Social Affairs through Sekolah Rakyat (People’s School) to provide creative economy training, and with the Ministry of Cooperatives via the Red and White Village Cooperatives to help affiliates market creative village products.

Additional partnerships with the Ministry of MSMEs and the Ministry of Trade aim to prepare the workforce for new entrepreneurial roles. Minister Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar added that data synchronisation between ministries will be prioritised to ensure accurate targeting of employment programmes.

Iskandar also highlighted that the collaboration will extend to rural and urban job creation, while improving systems for overseas labour placement to expand employment opportunities. The ministries emphasised that job creation in the creative economy is designed not only to address unemployment but also to support inclusive and sustainable economic growth nationwide.
