Microsoft to make three days a week in office compulsory for employees by 2026

Microsoft is officially rolling back its pandemic-era flexibility, requiring employees to return to the office at least three days a week. According to a report by The Verge, in a memo to staff, Amy Coleman, executive vice president and chief people officer, said the company’s data shows employees “thrive” when collaborating in person, citing stronger results and greater energy.

The policy will take effect in phases, beginning with the Puget Sound area in February 2026 before expanding to other US offices and eventually international locations, as per the report. Employees who live within 50 miles of a Microsoft office will be expected to work onsite three days a week by the end of February 2026.

Exceptions and flexibility

According to the report, not every role will be affected. Teams in account management, consulting, and field marketing — where flexibility is critical for meeting clients — will be exempt. Employees can also apply for exceptions until September 19 if they have no teammates at their assigned office or face unusually complex commutes, as per the report.

Microsoft acknowledged that some groups may go beyond the baseline requirement, with certain teams expected to return four or even five days a week depending on business needs.

Why now?

The company framed the move as essential for the AI era, stressing that innovation happens faster when people share ideas face to face. “As we build the AI products that will define this era, we need the kind of energy and momentum that comes from smart people working side by side,” Coleman wrote.

Employee impact

Microsoft emphasised that the policy is not linked to headcount reductions, instead aiming for greater consistency across teams. Leadership also pledged enhanced workplace safety and security measures as offices become busier again. Employees outside the US will see the policy applied only after 2026, as per the report.

The report also mentions that CEO Satya Nadella and Amy Coleman are expected to discuss the changes in greater detail during the company’s Employee Town Hall on September 11.
