‘The entire project becomes toxic, full of politics when…’: Manager denied promotion, employee took away almost entire team

Reddit user recently detailed their experience navigating workplace politics and personal strategy after being denied a promotion and receiving poor ratings in a multinational company (MNC). “My manager denied my promotion and gave bad ratings, so I took away almost all of the solution architects (and 5 devs got other jobs & 3 devs on the way),” the user wrote, highlighting the dramatic impact of their exit. The post illustrates how long-term employees handle toxic environments while balancing family responsibilities and career ambitions.

From Promotion Snub to Strategic Exit

The user explained their backstory: “In this MNC for last 5yrs 9mos, 5yrs 3mos in same project but different roles and teams. Just got the automated promotions (after completion of n number of years, stopped after 3yrs).” Despite receiving external offers, family obligations—including caring for a grandmother and ongoing house construction—prevented them from moving away from their native city.

Anticipating similar treatment from their current manager, the Redditor proactively discussed backup options with the client-side manager to ensure a smooth transition if they left the team. “In last February I dropped release mail from this project to HR and manager, they started searching for replacement… After training him for a month and half finally I took release from the domain entirely in June,” they said.

Mentoring Former Team Members Pays Off

After leaving, the Reddit user began coaching former project associates, optimizing resumes, and motivating them to pursue better opportunities. The results were swift: “Result of this: the old team’s solutions architect dropped resignation within 15 days after I left the team, negotiated 70% hike plus 1.6 lakh joining bonus and only 2 days office near his native. Two solution architects who just returned from onsite from another team under same project manager dropped resignation and got 85% hike and onsite again.”

The Redditor also described the fallout with their former manager: “Now the manager is getting furious and scolding my old team lead (her, self proclaimed) whenever he is getting face to face on any call. This was the same manager who was searching for an US onsite project for her (already at onsite in UK) 4 months ago.”

The thread resonated with other employees who have faced toxic work cultures. The Redditor concluded: “The entire project is toxic + racism + full of politics when the client is with the company for 30 years.”
