Anthropic to open Bengaluru office in 2026, begin hiring in India

Anthropic, the artificial intelligence research company behind the Claude model, announced it will open an office in Bengaluru in early 2026 and begin hiring local staff. The company confirmed the plans in a press statement released this week.

Co-founder and Chief Executive Dario Amodei, visiting India, said the expansion reflects both India’s technical talent and government focus on responsible AI.

“India is compelling because of the scale of its technical talent and the government’s commitment to ensuring AI benefits reach all of society,” Amodei said in the statement. He added that the company’s mission to deploy AI responsibly is aligned with India’s national AI goals.

Anthropic is valued at about $183 billion, making it the fourth most valuable private company in the world, the Wall Street Journal reported. The valuation followed a $13 billion Series F fundraising round completed in September 2025. The Journal noted the raise made Anthropic one of the world’s highest-valued private AI firms.

Bloomberg reported that Anthropic has raised more than $20 billion in total since its founding in 2021, with backing from Amazon, Google and several venture capital firms.

India expansion

The Bengaluru office will be Anthropic’s first in India and its second in the Indo-Pacific region after Tokyo, according to the company. Anthropic said Bengaluru was chosen for its depth of engineering talent and its concentration of enterprise and startup activity.

Paul Smith, Anthropic’s Chief Commercial Officer, said in the release that Indian companies are seeking AI models that deliver high performance alongside safety and reliability. “India’s enterprises want AI that is not only powerful but also safe and trustworthy, and Claude is designed to meet those needs,” he said.

Anthropic said its Claude models are already available to Indian customers through the Claude API, Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud Vertex AI. The company added that India is now its second-largest market after the United States.

According to the statement, Indian users account for a disproportionately high share of technical and software development usage compared to other countries.

Anthropic confirmed that it is investing in expanding Claude’s support for Indian languages. The company said enhanced Hindi capability has been rolled out, and improvements in Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Kannada, Malayalam and Urdu are under way.

The company said these features will enable broader adoption of Claude in education, government services and social impact projects.

Partnerships

Anthropic said it plans to collaborate with Indian government agencies, nonprofits and startups to apply AI to areas including education, healthcare, agriculture and public health. The company noted that such partnerships are intended to support India’s development priorities while advancing responsible AI.

Amodei said in the release that India’s approach to AI safety and inclusion provides strong alignment with Anthropic’s corporate mission.

Anthropic is regarded as one of the strongest competitors to OpenAI in generative AI. Its Claude models are widely used for tasks including summarisation, coding and customer support.

The company’s expansion in India comes as the government pushes for greater AI adoption across sectors while introducing frameworks to ensure responsible use.
