Techie replied to work email on weekend. Manager’s reaction goes viral: ‘Same company, different geography but work culture…..’

A recent post on the social media platform X sparked a lively discussion after a user highlighted a striking contrast in professional culture between India and Germany. The individual described a conversation with an information technology professional who had previously worked in India but later moved to Germany within the same company. His experience illustrated how dramatically workplace expectations can differ depending on geography.

From Constant Availability to Strict Work Boundaries

According to the account shared online, the IT professional had spent several years working in India before relocating to Germany for a role in the same organisation. During his time in India, workplace expectations appeared far more demanding. Managers frequently encouraged employees to remain available almost around the clock, including late nights and weekends. Responding to messages outside regular office hours was often treated as normal, and extended workdays were seen as part of the routine.

However, after shifting to Germany, he encountered a completely different approach to professional boundaries. On one occasion, he replied to a work-related email during the weekend, assuming it was appropriate to stay responsive. Instead of being appreciated for his promptness, he was reprimanded by his manager. The supervisor reportedly criticised him for handling office communication during personal time and emphasised that weekends were meant strictly for rest.

The experience left the employee surprised because the expectations in the two locations were dramatically different, even though the organisation itself remained the same. The situation highlighted how workplace norms can vary significantly between countries.

Social Media Users Share Their Views

The story quickly generated reactions from other users on X, many of whom reflected on the broader differences in global work cultures. Some commenters observed that employees in countries with shorter working hours often manage to deliver comparable results despite spending less time at their desks. According to these users, longer schedules do not necessarily translate into higher productivity and can sometimes indicate inefficient systems or unrealistic expectations.

Another commenter described the situation as one of the most surprising cultural adjustments for many Indians working abroad. They explained that individuals accustomed to extremely long workdays in India often struggle to accept that a standard work schedule of around seven to eight hours is considered sufficient in many European countries. While many people enjoy this improved balance between professional responsibilities and personal life, others debate whether such relaxed schedules influence economic growth.
