Rs 10,800 saved, 24 hours gained: Bengaluru techie compares work from home and work from office costs

The evolving work landscape in today’s world, our everyday choices, aren’t merely about convenience, but they are instrumental in quietly shaping how we spend our time, energy, and resources. Striking the perfect balance between productivity and personal life has always been a debatable topic. With work patterns continuing to shift, discussions regarding the work-from-home (WFH) and work-from-office (WFO) models have also been prevalent. In this context, a Bengaluru-based software professional, Abhishek Singh, has shared the hidden cost and time trade-off between WFO and WFH.

Framing it as a typical Tuesday, in his X-post, the professional has highlighted how routine choices can quietly add up in terms of both money spent and time lost. According to the techie, a regular work-from-office day comes with multiple expenses that often go unnoticed.

WFH vs WFO: Cost and time breakdown

Elaborating on the topic, Abhishek Singh revealed that his daily commute takes about 2 hours. Fuel and metro prices, coupled with parking, can cost anywhere between Rs 150 and Rs 300. Adding to the expenses are the food and beverage costs, with lunch and coffee typically ranging from Rs 250 to Rs 500. A quick smoke or a short tea break spikes the cost to Rs 100 a day. When combined, a single day at the office can significantly impact both finances and personal time.

On the contrary, the tech professional highlighted how the work-from-home routine appears far more economical. Yes, some non-negotiable factors include electricity usage, such as air conditioning, which may cost between Rs 60 and Rs 120 a day, and internet costs, which are approximately Rs 20. But apart from that, the overall spending remains considerably lower, with meals prepared at home further reducing the expense, averaging between Rs 80 and Rs 150 per day.

Techie’s post draws mixed reactions

As per Abhishek Singh, the comparison reveals that WFH can save approximately Rs 300 to Rs 900 every day, with nearly two hours otherwise spent commuting. Over a month, if an employee goes to the office for about 12 days, this translates to savings of Rs 3,600 to Rs 10,800 and about 24 hours of time. In conclusion, the techie encouraged individuals to track their own expenses and routines for at least two weeks before deciding which work model aligns best with their priorities and lifestyle.

The post received multiple reactions. One individual pointed out that while ‘WFH saves money and time, WFO adds networking and team exposure.’ Another Hyderabad-based user shared that they are also forced to spend 2 hours in commute when that time could easily be spent at the gym, pursuing hobbies, or simply getting proper rest.
