Artificial intelligence is increasingly being integrated into intelligence work, with the CIA deploying AI systems to analyse data gathered from human spies, according to reports. The technology is expected to assist the agency in evaluating the plans, capabilities and intentions of foreign nations, while producing comprehensive assessments to aid policymakers in decision-making.
The use of AI is expected to make intelligence analysis faster and more rigorous. The agency has already generated its first autonomous intelligence report, with Deputy Director Michael Ellis stating that its use will continue to expand.
According to a Politico report, Ellis stated that the CIA is developing a classified version of generative AI across its analytical platforms. The system is intended to assist analysts with routine tasks such as drafting key judgements, testing conclusions and identifying patterns in intelligence data.
While AI is expected to play a significant role in processing and analysis, the agency has clarified that final decision-making authority will remain with human analysts.
The United States has already begun deploying AI in its military operations involving Iran. In March, Brad Cooper, head of US Central Command, stated that AI tools are helping American forces process large volumes of data more efficiently. Reports indicate that AI has enabled US forces to analyse vast datasets in seconds, allowing for quicker and more informed decisions compared to adversaries.
The development comes amid a broader policy and legal conflict between the US government and Anthropic. The US Department of War has blacklisted the company and designated it as a supply chain risk after it attempted to restrict the use of its AI models for applications linked to lethal operations and mass surveillance.
Ellis stated that the agency would not allow private companies to dictate how and when the CIA makes lawful use of their technologies. He further informed that the deployment of AI is also aimed at maintaining a competitive edge over China, which he believes is rapidly closing the gap with the US in technological innovation.
The CIA has already tested approximately 300 AI-related projects over the past year, including initiatives focused on large-scale data processing and language translation, highlighting the growing role of artificial intelligence in modern intelligence operations.
