Nike to cut 1,400 jobs globally in ongoing restructuring push

Nike is set to cut about 1,400 jobs globally as part of a broader restructuring aimed at simplifying operations and improving efficiency during a period of slower growth.

The layoffs, which represent just under 2% of Nike’s total workforce, will largely affect corporate roles, particularly in technology and operations teams. The cuts are spread across key regions including North America, Europe and Asia, and come as the company continues to reorganise its internal structure.

This marks the second round of job reductions this year. Earlier in 2026, Nike eliminated roughly 775 roles as part of an ongoing effort to reduce costs and accelerate automation. Together, the moves signal a deeper overhaul of how the company operates behind the scenes.

Nike said the latest cuts are part of a plan to streamline decision-making, reduce complexity and make the organisation more agile. As part of this effort, the company is consolidating certain technology functions and scaling back overlapping roles, including in major hubs such as Oregon and India. The focus is on aligning teams more closely with business priorities and speeding up execution.

The restructuring comes at a time when Nike is facing multiple headwinds. Sales growth has slowed in recent quarters, particularly in North America, its largest market. At the same time, the company is dealing with increased competition from newer and more specialised athletic brands that have been gaining market share in key categories.

China, another critical market for Nike, has also shown signs of weakness, with the company expecting a sharper revenue decline there in the near term. Overall, Nike has projected a revenue drop of between 2% and 4% for the current quarter.

Under CEO Elliott Hill, who took over in 2024, Nike has been working to refocus on core sports segments such as running and football, while also pushing for faster product innovation and a tighter connection with consumers.

The latest layoffs highlight the scale of the changes underway as Nike looks to reset its cost base and position itself for more sustainable growth.
