A software engineer who stepped away from a stable role, took a full year off, and then returned to land a position at Meta has sparked fresh debate on burnout, recovery, and career timing. Aditya Jha took to X to highlight the idea that career breaks should be normalised, pointing to an example of a senior software engineer who previously worked at LinkedIn before stepping away from work in 2023. According to the post, the engineer had built a solid career as a senior SWE at LinkedIn before choosing to take a full-year break. The pause was not framed as a setback, but as a deliberate step away from continuous work pressure.
During this time, the individual focused on personal hobbies, travel, and family, using the break as a reset rather than a pause in ambition. After a year away from formal employment, he re-entered the workforce in September 2024, joining Meta as a Software Engineer.
The transition from a senior-level role before the break to a standard SWE role after returning has also become a talking point, with many seeing it as a trade-off for long-term sustainability over hierarchy.
