Spirit Airlines has suspended all operations after running out of cash, bringing an end to the operations of one of the United States’ largest low-cost carriers and impacting nearly 17,000 employees.
The airline halted flights early Saturday, with its final scheduled service landing in Dallas, according to reports by CBS News. The sudden shutdown has left thousands of passengers stranded while creating uncertainty around refunds, rebookings and employee futures.
The collapse follows prolonged financial instability that included multiple bankruptcy filings over the past two years. Company leadership cited rising operating expenses, particularly fuel costs, as a major factor behind the decision to shut down.
Spirit’s chief executive reportedly acknowledged that the company had no viable path forward as costs continued to escalate. The pressure intensified after jet fuel prices surged sharply following geopolitical tensions linked to the Iran conflict, increasing operational strain across the aviation industry.
Low-cost carriers such as Spirit are especially vulnerable to fuel price volatility because their business models rely on high aircraft utilisation, lean operations and narrow profit margins.
Passengers across multiple routes were caught off guard by the closure. Many learned of cancellations only after reaching airports or attempting to check in for flights. Several travellers also raised concerns over delays and uncertainty surrounding refunds.
Spirit later stated that most customers who made bookings using payment cards had been issued refunds, while some transactions were still under processing and could take additional time to appear in accounts.
The shutdown has also triggered widespread workforce disruption. Thousands of pilots, cabin crew, ground staff and operational employees have been affected as the airline works to manage the fallout from the closure.
According to company updates:
- Approximately 17,000 employees have been impacted
- Nearly 1,500 crew members have already returned home
- Additional operational staff remain stranded or in transit following cancellations
Spirit said it is attempting to assist employees and coordinate the return of remaining crew members.
Other airlines, including JetBlue and United Airlines, have stepped in with discounted rescue fares for stranded passengers. However, these measures are expected to offer only temporary relief for affected travellers.
The airline’s collapse reflects broader challenges facing the aviation sector, where rising fuel costs, geopolitical disruptions and operational pressures are reshaping the economics of air travel.
For the industry, Spirit’s shutdown raises fresh concerns about the long-term sustainability of ultra-low-cost airline models in an environment where external cost shocks can rapidly erode financial stability.
