'My Manager Doesn't Allow Background Blur': Reddit Calls Out Indian Boss’ ‘Strict’ Camera-On Rules For WFH Employees

The government’s recent announcement pushing for Work From Home (WFH) was supposed to be a moment of collective celebration for corporate India. But for one techie on Reddit, the dream of rolling out of bed and logging into work quickly turned into a full-blown home decor panic, all thanks to his boss.

Taking to Reddit, a user shared their hilarious yet deeply relatable nightmare about transitioning back to a home setup after months in the office.

“Bro, now that the govt actually made that announcement about WFH, my office finally gave in and said we can stay home for the next few weeks. I was celebrating like crazy until I actually looked at my “home office” today. It’s literally just a corner of my room with a layers of dust under the keyboard and monitor.”

The real problem? A camera-on meeting scheduled for the very next day.

“I have a camera-on call with my manager tomorrow and there is no way I’m letting them see this kachra in the background. My walls are very dirty and there are hooks on the wall with bunch of clothes hung and the curtains are also ugly asf… don’t want my boss to think I’m unhygienic and poor asf ( might help me get a raise tho xD)”

To make matters worse, the user revealed they suffer from a severe dust allergy, making a quick DIY deep-clean impossible, and are contemplating booking an emergency service like Pronto. But the kicker that sent the internet into a frenzy was their company’s bizarre, dystopian camera policy:

“Also, my boss doesn’t allow bg blur/bg change because they got super strict about video after someone got caught working outside.”

Netizens Call Out “Toxic” Micromanagement

The thread instantly struck a nerve with corporate workers who are utterly exhausted by intrusive surveillance tactics disguised as “productivity tracking.” Users immediately questioned the logic of banning background filters.

One commenter pointed out: “Why does it matter if you are working outside or at home? There are lots of public workspaces. You can go there and work too. This shouldn’t be a matter of concern for the higher authority. If it’s about confidentiality, then they shouldn’t have even given WFH.”

Another highlighted the basic privacy issues of shared living spaces: “I get it the video call but not having background is stupid. Actually it should be mandatory to put your office background to avoid any distraction. Not everyone has saperate room, what if two bachelors are working from same room and hall.”

A third user didn’t mince words, writing simply: “Such an asshxxx of a manager you have!”

The Internet’s Genius (And Chaotic) Advice

While some suggested practical workarounds, others recommended leaning heavily into malicious compliance to make the micromanagers uncomfortable.

For the practical route, one user shared a neat framing hack: “Attend your video calls from laptop with your back against a blank wall and do your regular work here, that’s how I did when I had a hall setup with a lot of clutter like sofa, etc in the background”

Then came the chaotic crowd, urging the employee to own the mess as a professional persona: “Why you’re afraid, show it and they’ll not bother you. Say that’s how I operate, for some it’s mess for me it’s strategically placed for efficient usage. Corporate b**c**di rules PS I’ve done that.”

But the gold medal for the best response went to the user who suggested the ultimate power move to force the manager to change the rule: “Pull a rope across the room and dry your undergarments on that. That will make the mf micromanagers stop asking to switch on camera”
