Artificial intelligence is expected to significantly reshape the nature of work in India, affecting millions of jobs while also creating new opportunities, according to a Parliamentary Standing Committee report.
The report cites estimates that around 38 million jobs in India could be transformed by the adoption of AI technologies.
This transformation reflects the growing integration of AI across industries, which is altering how tasks are performed and the skills required for various roles. The report indicates that AI is likely to change job structures rather than simply replace them.
At the same time, the report points to projections indicating the creation of new roles in areas such as artificial intelligence and data science.
These emerging roles are linked to the development, deployment and management of AI systems, as well as to supporting functions across sectors where AI is being adopted.
The report highlights that this shift will require significant changes in workforce skills, with increasing emphasis on digital and technical capabilities.
To prepare for these changes, it underscores the importance of reskilling and upskilling initiatives aimed at equipping workers with relevant competencies.
The findings suggest that while AI will transform the labour market, its impact will depend on how effectively the workforce adapts to evolving skill requirements.
