Legg told Professor Hannah Fry that AI could fundamentally change how people work, earn money, and justify their place in the economy. He expects current weaknesses in AI, such as reasoning, visual understanding and long-term learning, to be overcome in the coming years. As these gaps close, AI is likely to reach, and then surpass, professional-level performance in areas like coding, mathematics, and complex knowledge work.

Legg offered a stark rule of thumb: “If you can do the job remotely over the internet just using a computer, then that job is potentially at risk.” As AI tools grow more capable, companies may no longer need large, dispersed teams of online workers collaborating from different locations.
Software engineering is one of the fields he believes could be transformed most dramatically. In his view, a team that once required 100 software engineers might soon need only 20, with those remaining staff using powerful AI systems to multiply their productivity.

While such gains may boost output, Legg warned they could also mean fewer opportunities, particularly for junior employees and remote workers hoping to break into digital careers. He cautioned that the current model, in which people trade mental and physical labour for access to resources, may no longer function in the same way as AI spreads across the economy.
