One recent case shared online highlights the tension that can arise when employees are expected to address work issues while on officially sanctioned time off.

An employee who had confirmed their PTO in advance and set automatic replies on both work email and phone faced repeated contact from their manager over a delayed project. Their work mobile was set to forward calls to the office while they were away. Despite these precautions, the manager initially contacted the employee on their business phone and later on their personal number, asking whether a call should be made to a client regarding the delay. The employee did not respond, noting that management should handle issues once someone is on approved leave.

In the following days, the manager left a voicemail indicating they did not want to intervene in the project directly and suggested the employee contact a colleague to resolve the client’s concerns. The employee remained unavailable, considering themselves off duty while on PTO. When the manager made further contact, claiming leadership was escalating the issue and the client was losing confidence, the employee blocked the manager’s number on their personal phone to preserve their time off.

Upper Management Contacted Through Social Media

After being blocked, the manager reached out via Facebook, requesting a call back. Soon after, a district manager from the collaborative department also messaged the employee on the platform with a similar request. The employee muted both messages and did not reply. In their public online summary, the employee described feeling that their approved leave was being disregarded and that the multiple attempts to contact them were intrusive.

Online Reaction Highlights Work‑Life Boundary Concerns

Responses from others online reflected common frustrations when vacation time is encroached upon. Some commenters shared experiences of having to work during leave or negotiating with payroll to recover lost vacation days. Others emphasized the importance of fully disconnecting from work during PTO, noting that paid leave should mean relief from job duties and communications.
