Career choices often come with unexpected crossroads, especially early on. A young professional recently shared on Reddit how a role he genuinely loved at a startup came just as he was being pulled back into his family business. The user shared the story about joining a startup he described as “so good, people and work!!” only to find himself struggling between the role and his family’s long-running business.
The user had been placed in a service-based company through his college placement for 6 LPA. However, his father told him, “You can implement all your knowledge and make this business big by going Online (Taking Job Work Online or creating your own products),” and asked him to return home to work in the family’s 20-year-old injection molding business. Acting on this advice, he came back at the start of his 8th semester.
Factory Delays Open a Window for New Opportunities
The planned factory faced a land dispute, delaying its setup. During this period, he continued looking at job postings, writing, “I don’t know why I think it became a habit of mine.” On June 26, he saw a Reddit post from a founder hiring for a Content and SEO role. With prior experience in digital marketing and web development, he applied and completed an assignment on SEO and credit card content.
He was then interviewed by his current manager. “I think I answered everything vaguely…. Then he asked me some web dev questions, which I think I gave good answers to…. The interview ended. I thought there was a 50 percent chance.” A day later, he received an offer letter from the founder’s email with a stipend of 10k. He initially hesitated, “First I was like Jao Ki Nahi”…but then I thought, Anyway the land dispute will take at least months.” Negotiating with his father, he lied that the startup was offering 25K and joined them.
Startup Culture Keeps Him Motivated
He described the team as “some of the greatest people.” He praised his manager with 10 years of experience: “The coolest person I’ve met; he just doesn’t take stress; he just figures out the way to do the stuff, and it literally works out…..” He also admired the head of design and the founder’s brother, a 25-year-old CA, noting how brainstorming on marketing and making office reels outside office hours made the work enjoyable.

Despite his attachment, he revealed he will leave the startup in December due to family obligations: “But with a very heavy heart, I have to leave them this December as I can never deny my dad. Still haven’t told them about this, but will tell them tomorrow.”
