Do Googlers in India need to fear job cuts?

Employees of Google in Hyderabad and Bengaluru may have to brace for job cuts. Media reports say that the IT major is preparing for another round of job cuts as part of its ongoing global restructuring efforts. This time, the sales, marketing and advertising teams, mainly in Hyderabad and Bengaluru, will reportedly bear the maximum brunt.

There is no official confirmation of this news yet. The exact number of roles affected is not known either. As per Business Standard, the layoff process may start this week.

It hasn’t been long since Google restructured its Platforms and Devices teams, cutting hundreds of jobs, globally. These cuts that happened around 11 April, affected teams that oversaw Android, Pixel, and the Chrome browser. Google has been trying to streamline operations and improve efficiency across teams for some time now. The layoffs came after a voluntary exit programme which was offered in January to employees within the same unit. That programme was offered after Google combined its Platforms and Devices teams last year to ensure closer collaboration and faster execution. At the time, the company had indicated that a leaner structure was part of its long-term strategy.

As per the report, Google is expected to be more cautious when it comes to cutting engineering roles in India. It may try to reassign employees in engineering roles to other more profitable projects instead of terminating their employment altogether.
