Employee reveals how 'progressive' company laid off employees within 15 minutes: 'One of them was battling cancer'

A former staff member of a well-known magazine recently shared a distressing account on the subreddit Anti Work, describing how his entire writing team was abruptly dismissed. Still grappling with disbelief, he explained that he had been employed as a writer at what was publicly portrayed as a socially conscious and forward-thinking organization. Without warning, all staff writers were called into a virtual meeting with barely fifteen minutes’ notice. During that brief online gathering, management announced that their employment was terminated effective immediately. The company’s new strategy, they said, was to rely on freelance contributors instead of maintaining a full-time editorial team.

Selective Retention and Unequal Impact

Among the writers, only one individual was spared—the reporter who held a White House press credential. Ironically, even the supervisor who had tirelessly overseen the website, often sacrificing personal time and working excessive unpaid hours, was dismissed. The former employee pointed out a troubling gender imbalance in the layoffs, noting that women were disproportionately affected, with roughly one man retained for every three women let go.

What hurt most, however, was the treatment of a senior colleague nearing 70 years of age. She had dedicated three decades to the company and was close to retirement. While recovering from cancer, she too was removed from her position without exception. The poster expressed deep anguish over her situation, feeling that the decision lacked both empathy and basic humanity.

Corporate Priorities Over Legacy

Although leadership offered no detailed explanation, the ex-employee suspected that the company was redirecting funds to bolster its struggling video division. According to him, the video unit had previously failed to generate profit. In the process, three longstanding queer-focused digital platforms were effectively dismantled, seemingly to support a streaming venture that had little recognition or audience engagement.

The irony was difficult to ignore. The publication had secured one of the industry’s most prestigious honors every year during his four-year tenure. He himself had received professional nominations for his reporting, yet accolades did not shield him from termination.

Facing an Uncertain Future

Determined to regroup, he decided to take the weekend to process the setback before applying for unemployment benefits and seeking fresh opportunities. There was no severance package offered—only compensation for unused paid time off. The loss was especially painful because he had cherished the role, felt proud to earn it at a young age, and believed his work contributed positively to society. The experience left him questioning whether any corporation truly lives up to progressive ideals.

Reddit Community Weighs In

Fellow Reddit users responded with strong opinions. Some predicted the company would soon realize that top-tier freelance writers demand significant pay and that replacing institutional knowledge is far from simple. Others working in media described similar instability, citing repeated layoffs and the growing reliance on contract labor. Several commenters concluded that no matter how socially conscious a brand appears, profit motives ultimately drive corporate decisions.
