An Indian employee is apparently considering resignation after their salary remained unpaid for more than two months, a situation that has drawn strong reactions on Reddit and revived concerns around delayed wage payments in smaller Indian companies.
The employee wrote that they had not received their salary for the last two months and that the third month had already begun without clarity from their organisation. According to the post, repeated follow-ups with the HR department led nowhere, with responses such as “I don’t know” and “I’ll check and get back,” and no written communication explaining the delay. “I’m in a really stressful situation,” they said, seeking advice from fellow Reddit users on how they should proceed.
‘I feel stuck’: Employee
The employee said they continued fulfilling his duties believing that payment would eventually come, but the protracted delay had now begun to affect rent, bills and his mental well-being. Describing the situation as “exhausting,” he said he was considering resigning and initiating a full and final (F&F) settlement to recover pending dues.
“I have salary slips from earlier months and an offer letter, but nothing official explaining the delay right now. Any guidance would really help. I feel stuck and honestly, a bit cheated,” they wrote.
The post prompted dozens of responses from users advising him against immediate resignation, warning that doing so could further delay settlement. Several commenters suggested escalating the matter formally, starting with an email trail documenting the unpaid salary and including managers in communication. Some also advised him to secure written proof before taking any legal or administrative step.
One user cautioned that F&F processing itself could be delayed if the company was already withholding salaries. “Don’t resign as your F&F can get delayed. I can’t say much without knowing about your company. In general, if the police stations are good in your state, you can approach the local police station. But that’s a last resort. The best way forward is to actually get the pending salary. Ask senior colleagues (not HR). The local police station can help,” one Reddit user said.
‘Document official communication’: Reddit users
Multiple commenters said the behaviour of the HR department — offering no timeline or official explanation — was a red flag, advising the employee to create documented evidence through email before resigning. “If you haven’t yet, send an email to HR, keep the manager in CC and ask them about the pending salary. If they don’t confirm, every two business days, you can follow up. I am not sure, but I believe there are legal options after a certain delay, but first keep some proof ready, so they can’t change their story.
Others took a more pragmatic view, urging the employee to begin job hunting immediately while withholding company-issued IT assets until dues were settled. “This sounds so insane,” added another user. “At this point, just resign and find a new job, but don’t return any IT assets and keep them with you until you receive your pending salary, and only then return the system. But don’t expect FnF on time too.”
