‘Feel like my world is falling apart’: Tech sales employee shares painful layoff experience

A tech sales professional has taken to Reddit to share the shock, anger and confusion after being laid off despite having what they describe as a “good and strong pipeline” of deals.

“Got layoff today in a tech company. Confronted my manager and he told me it’s upper management decision bla bla bla. Feel like he can’t even tell me the proper answer when I asked him why,” the post begins.

The employee said that he was performing well and was not the worst among his peers yet still selected for termination while others remained. “I feel angry because those pipelines will be handed over to my peers who did nothing! I spend months and months closing the sales and the PO are on the way. How could they do this ? I’m talking about the largest deal I’ll ever bring to the table,” he wrote.

‘There is severance pay but it’s not that great’

The employee confirmed that he would receive severance but called it “not that great,” explaining, “They give me 1 month notice. What should I do within this 1 month? Shall I still be doing work and all those compulsory trainings which has been scheduled?”

Despite the anger, the individual admitted they had enjoyed working at the firm. “To be frank, I love this company and the pay is good. I’m just worried that if I go out and find other job, the pay may not be as good as this and I have little interest in other tech companies.”

Ending the post with a note of vulnerability, the tech professional said, “Sigh, any tips how to navigate this situation?”

Users react

The story has struck a chord with other Reddit users, many of whom are sharing advice on severance negotiations, emotional recovery, and planning the next career move after a sudden layoff.

A user commented under the post saying, “The Tech industry is brutal right now. I was laid off from a tech startup in December. Layoffs suck, especially if they’re completely out of the blue like that. But I did find a more stable gig after my layoff. So I’m hoping you can find the same.”
