‘Hiring while pregnant should be illegal,’ Internet divided after manager complains about expecting employee

A post on the social media platform TeamBlind has gone viral. The post suggests the case of hiring a pregnant employee and the situation where the manager has to now hire another candidate. It read, ” Just hired a candidate and failed to realize she was 6-months pregnant… FML. Now gotta rehire (yet again)… it should be illegal to apply when pregnant. Trying to rescind but in the meantime, back to hiring L6.”

” You are the kind of person people shouldn’t work with”

Netizens flooded their opinion on this post. An employee who went through similar discrimination in the past wrote, “I was 5 months pregnant when I got hired. They mommy tracked me with the same small-mindedness that you are showing off right now. Fast forward a year and I’m beating their top performers by a mile – they can’t stop pulling me into projects to help them from sinking. I code. I’m damn good at it. I design and solve problems better than most. And I can do it with a baby in my lap while in an unrelated meeting. I’m sorry you and your bros can’t keep up. Not with the times. Not with the mad skill me and my sisters got. Don’t feel sad and insecure about having to wait for a few months to get a golden asset back and contributing. You hired her for a reason don’t forget it. She’s gonna be back and be more bad-ass than the day you hired her. Because now she’s a Mama and she knows how to be your boss.” Another wrote, “OP is the kind of human you pray to God that you would never have to work/associate with.”

“Serious act of discrimination”

“She did nothing wrong, what you are doing is a serious act of discrimination. I think HR can easily pick out you as a manager of a female L6 recently hired/will hire soon in the US who is about to go on maternity leave. All google FTE can use Parental/maternity leave from day 1. I will report you to HR with this capture. Xuck off. By the way, you should comp up with a good excuse to explain to your wife, your mother, and your daughter why you were suddenly fired from your job,” wrote a netizen. Another noted, “Rescind the offer. I only hire people who are single, have no kids, don’t get sick, and can’t get pregnant (I will hire women post menopause or trans which shows I am not sexist or a bigot).”
