An engineering student has claimed that posting regularly on X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, helped him earn more than the starting salaries offered at his college campus placements.
Kanav, a 21-year-old engineer whose bio on X simply reads “Engineer, 21,” shared a screenshot of his earnings from the platform. The screenshot showed that between July 5 and August 30, he received a total of Rs 67,419 from X in five separate payouts.
The largest single payment was Rs 21,097, while in August alone he claimed to have earned more than Rs 32,000.
‘More Than a Tier-3 College Salary’
Kanav compared his earnings on X to the salaries offered at his tier-3 engineering college. He claimed that the average package on his campus was around Rs 1–5 lakh per year, which translates to approximately Rs 8,300–Rs 41,000 per month before deductions.
“Posting on X is already paying me more than average tier 3 campus placement and I literally only started 2 months ago,” Kanav wrote, pointing out that most entry-level jobs offer less in-hand pay than what he earned from posting content.
How X Pays Its Creators
Under X’s Creator Revenue Sharing Program, eligible users can earn ad revenue from replies to their posts. To qualify, a user must have a Premium subscription, at least 5 million organic impressions in the past three months, and at least 500 verified followers.
Once approved, payouts are processed every two weeks with a minimum threshold of $10 (Rs 881).
A Viral Post Changed Everything
Kanav revealed that he started posting about tech-related topics because he believed they would interest a wider audience.
“Within my first week of posting, I got a bit lucky and a random image I posted went viral,” he told during a conversation with HT.com. “That single post enabled monetisation on my account. After that, the following grew steadily as I kept posting consistently over two to three months.”
According to a screenshot shared by him, Kanav currently has 882 verified followers and 28.4 million impressions on his posts.
