Hybrid job turns full office work, employee shares dilemma online

A 30-year-old professional has sparked a discussion online after sharing his workplace dilemma on Reddit, claiming that the job he accepted as a hybrid role turned out to require full-time office attendance.

According to the post, the employee had relocated from Bengaluru to Pune after being informed during the hiring process that the role would follow a hybrid model, requiring employees to work from the office only two or three days a week.

However, after joining the company, he discovered that the team he had been assigned to followed a completely different work arrangement.

Hybrid promise replaced by five-day office routine

The man said that on his first day at work he was informed by his manager and teammates that their team works entirely from the office.

“During hiring, HR clearly communicated verbally that the role was hybrid (2–3 days in office). However, on day one I was told that this specific team works five days from the office,” he wrote in his Reddit post.

He added that the typical work schedule in the team runs from 11:30 am to 8:30 pm, and employees sometimes stay even longer if late evening meetings are scheduled.

According to him, meetings can extend as late as 10:15 pm, which means employees remain in the office well beyond the regular work hours.

Manager allegedly rejects work-from-home requests

The employee said he raised the issue with HR shortly after joining the company. While the HR representative reportedly expressed surprise about the arrangement, the situation did not change.

He claimed that the team’s senior manager clearly stated on the first day that work-from-home was not permitted in the team.

According to the post, the manager reportedly told employees that anyone seeking remote work could consider leaving the team.

Employee unsure about future

The employee also described the team culture as “traditional”, suggesting that physical presence in the office is viewed as the main indicator of productivity.

Having worked remotely for nearly five years in his previous role, he said the sudden shift to a strict office routine has been difficult.

He added that his daily routine has become exhausting, leaving him unsure whether he should adjust to the team’s expectations or begin searching for another job.

The post has since generated mixed reactions online, with some users advising him to explore other opportunities while others suggested reviewing the terms in his offer letter to determine whether the hybrid arrangement was formally documented.
