A longtime employee has turned to Reddit to share their anguish after being laid off following two decades at the same company. The user revealed that they had been with the firm since its inception and had enjoyed their role for years, but things changed after the company was acquired by a bank.
Shock After Sudden Layoff
The 56-year-old worker explained that despite reassurances, they were informed on July 22 that their position was being eliminated in favor of freelance workers. “I am told I am being laid off, not because of anything I did but because the company has decided to eliminate my position and use freelance workers instead (I am a creative worker),” the post read.
They noted that while they received 20 weeks of severance and unemployment support, the financial burden of paying off college debt for two children added to the stress. The worker admitted they are struggling to process the anger and shock, saying they relive the termination conversation with HR every morning.

Reddit users responded with empathy, sharing their own experiences of sudden job losses. One commenter said, “I know it sucks right now and I felt the same way. I am just shy of 50. The sun will still come up in the morning and your kids still need you. And it is hard right now but just keep pushing forward that is all any of can do. We have no choice.”
Another user recounted how even senior leadership wasn’t spared during layoffs. “My former manager, Sr Director, was with the company for almost 25 years. She had devoted her life to her work, got to the office so early and left so late…just for them to lay her off when the reorg happened. She was so emotional during our last team call. People say we have no loyalty or whatsoever…but who would have if things like that happened.”
