If AI writes 100% of code at Anthropic, what happens to engineers? Claude code chief explains

A significant change is happening inside Anthropic, the company behind the AI LLM model Claude. According to company, AI now writes almost all of the code used to build its products. This has led many people to ask if AI writes 100 per cent of the code, what are human engineers supposed to do?

Claude is writing the code

At the 2026 Cisco AI summit Anthropic’s Chief Product Officer Mike Kreiger said that AI tools inside the company are generating nearly all of their internal code. This includes large updates, new features, and even documentation. Instead of writing code line by line, engineers now give instructions to AI systems like Claude and review what the AI produces.

In simple terms, the AI is helping build itself. The role of engineers is changing from “writing code” to “guiding the AI that writes the code.”

What did Boris Cherney post on ‘X’?

“Someone has to prompt the Claudes, talk to customers, coordinate with other teams, decide what to build next. Engineering is changing and great engineers are more important than ever,” Cherny wrote in his reply to a person on ‘X'(formerly twitter).

When an ‘X’ user wrote “Claude Code is writing 100% of Claude code now. But Anthropic has 100+ open dev positions on their jobs page?”

What software engineers do now?

This change of AI writing code does not mean engineers are no longer needed. Boris Cherney , head of Claude Code has made it clear that coding is only one part of the job. Engineers still decide what needs to be built. They talk to customers, plan new features, test the AI’s output, and make sure everything works properly before it goes live.

AI can generate code quickly, but it still needs human supervision. Someone has to check for mistakes, improve the final product, and make important decisions. In fact, Anthropic says skilled engineers are more important than ever because they now work at a higher level

New industry wide trend

Anthropic changing software engineers role shows a larger trend in the technology industry. Many companies are using AI tools to speed up software development. The idea is that AI handles repetitive tasks while humans focus on strategy, creativity, and problem-solving.

Earlier, Elon Musk, CEO of xAI, predicted that by 2026 traditional coding could become obsolete for software engineers. “I think (..) by the end of this year you don’t even bother doing coding. The AI will just create the binary directly. And the AI can create a much more efficient binary than can be done by any compiler,” said Musk, in a viral video

Importantly, this shift also raises concerns. Some worry about job losses or whether developers might lose their technical skills over time. Others question whether AI-generated code can always be trusted, especially for complex systems.
