Indian techie requests flexible hours to care for newborn, US manager's reply is viral

An Indian techie working abroad shared how a simple exchange with his American manager turned into a wholesome example of what supportive work culture could actually look like, complete with clear communication, mutual trust, and zero friction.

Posting on r/IndianWorkplace on Reddit, the software developer explained his situation in detail. “My wife is going back to work after we had a baby, and we hired a nanny for our 7-month-old,” he wrote, adding that the nanny would leave by 4:30 pm, after which he would be taking care of the baby until his wife returned around 7:30 pm.

He also mentioned that they were living abroad without any family support. “We live abroad, so we don’t have any other help, like parents/in-laws or any other relatives living nearby. It’s just the two of us taking care of the baby,” he shared.

Instead of struggling silently, he chose to inform his manager with complete transparency. In his message, he wrote, “I wanted to let you know about some changes to my work calendar starting today… I will be out of the office each day from 4:30-7:30 pm to care for the baby.”

He also reassured her that he would adjust his work hours accordingly, adding, “I plan to make up this time either at night or by starting my day earlier… I hope this adjustment works for you and the team.”

What followed was a response that caught the internet’s attention.

His manager replied warmly, saying, “This is wonderful! I hope your baby enjoys spending time with the nanny and quickly learns many new things,” before offering a practical suggestion to avoid confusion: blocking that time as OOO in his calendar to prevent scheduling conflicts.

Reflecting on the experience, the techie wrote, “My manager is really nice and understanding. She really cares about us. This is just one of the examples of how good of a manager she is!!”

He went on to contrast this with the work culture back home, adding, “This is one of the reasons why I don’t think I can work in India ever! The level of freedom and work culture you get abroad is just next level!”

He also explained how that trust translates into better performance, saying that since no one questions his commitment, “it only motivates me to do better, and I always make sure I over-deliver at work.”

The post was well-received by several social media users online, especially those who had experienced the opposite.

“Good that you have a wonderful manager! Wish we had more of those!” one user commented.

Another pointed out how both sides handled the situation well: “Not just an example of a good manager but also a good worker who has very clearly stated the reason, the boundaries and has offered to take care of any impact that might arise due to this change.”

Several users also discussed how the story stood out as proof that sometimes, good workplace culture wasn’t about big policies, but about how people responded in small, real-life moments.
