Starting a new life in another country often comes with hopes of better opportunities, but finding work can take longer than expected. For many migrants, getting that first job becomes the biggest challenge. So, how difficult is it really to break into the job market in New Zealand?
An Indian woman living in New Zealand has sparked a wider conversation online after sharing her experience. Posting on Instagram, she addressed a question she says she is often asked, what are job opportunities like for newcomers? Her response offers a practical view of the current situation.
She goes on to speak about the reality many newcomers face while looking for work. She says, “Ever since I moved from the US to New Zealand, lots of my friends from the US and India have been asking me one question, that is, how is the New Zealand job market? So honestly, right now, it’s pretty tough.”
Explaining the situation further, she adds, “Jobs are very limited here. Companies here mostly prefer people who have New Zealand experience already over the people who know it’s tough, but it’s not impossible, guys. If you are job hunting right now, I wish you all the best. I hope you get a new job really, really soon.”
Along with the video, she shared a caption reflecting her current journey. It read, “Not every chapter is picture-perfect. Right now, it’s about patience, consistency, and believing in myself even when things feel uncertain. Job hunting in a new country isn’t easy, but I know this phase is shaping me into someone stronger. Better days are coming.”
Her post connected with many viewers, prompting several to share their own experiences in the comments. One user said, “5000 application and got one.” Another added, “Job market is really bad 110+ applications in over 5 months.” Another said, “I faced the same issue when I moved, local experience matters a lot.”
These responses show how competitive the process can be, especially for those trying to enter a new job market without local networks or references.
At the same time, some users offered a different perspective, suggesting that opportunities do exist depending on skills and approach. A user explained, “From a NZ recruiters perspective . This isn’t entirely true – NZ is a skill short market – depends on what you have studied where you have studied and how you present yourself. The market is tough no doubt but I agree that it is a waiting game sometimes.”
