India’s electronics manufacturing sector has generated approximately 1.33 million jobs over the past five years, largely driven by the government’s Production‑Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, according to official sources and industry reports.
Introduced under the Make in India initiative, the PLI programme has significantly expanded domestic smartphone production and exports, encouraging both multinational and local firms to invest in large-scale manufacturing operations. The resulting employment growth spans direct assembly roles and indirect positions across supply chains, logistics and ancillary services, contributing to the formalisation of the workforce.
Analysts note that the surge in jobs is closely linked to the rise in electronics exports, positioning India as a key player in the global electronics value chain. The scheme’s performance‑based incentives have not only boosted production volumes but also fostered skill development and broader industrial competitiveness.
Industry experts say sustained support through incentive programmes could further accelerate employment growth and cement India’s reputation as a global hub for consumer electronics manufacturing.
