Now workers in Delhi will benefit from annual health check-ups that will be conducted by the Delhi government. A notification will also be issued making three hours of rest period mandatory for workers, from 12 noon to 3 p.m. during the peak of summer season when the temperatures soar. About 3,000 water coolers will also be installed for workers to quench their thirst during the summer heat.
These measures, announced by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on the occasion of International Labour Day, are aimed at ensuring the well-being of workers and their family members.
Over the past couple of the Delhi government has already implemented certain programmes for the benefit of workers. For instance, Ayushman Bharat is a scheme for health insurance, while senior citizens aged 70 and above are covered under the Vay Vandana Yojana, and Atal Canteens offer meals at low prices. The state government will also set up 500 Palna Centres across Delhi to fulfil the childcare needs of workers’ children. This will help poor women workers to go to work while their children are taken care of. These centres will be run by trained nurses and anganwadi employees.
The Atal Canteens will reportedly provide nutritious meals at a nominal price of Rs 5.
Additionally, welfare boards will be set up dedicated to the welfare of construction workers, gig workers, domestic helps, cab/ taxi drivers and auto-rickshaw drivers.
