Microsoft employee shares her manager was terminated during meeting, ‘they’re letting go of good people’

Microsoft is once again facing scrutiny following a new wave of mass layoffs. The Redmond, Washington-based software giant is reportedly cutting nearly 9,000 jobs as part of a strategic effort to streamline operations, reduce management layers, and enhance overall efficiency.

These significant job reductions are impacting various divisions globally, particularly within Xbox and other creative segments, leading to unexpected dismissals for numerous employees. Although the 9,000 layoffs constitute approximately 4 percent of Microsoft’s total workforce restructuring, affected employees have voiced their strong dissatisfaction on social media platforms.

Early reports regarding the layoffs are emerging, notably from Amanda Goodall, widely known as ‘The Job Chick’ (@thejobchick on X). As CEO of EdgePulse, a workforce intelligence and market forecasting firm, Goodall has been sharing firsthand accounts. In one such post, she highlighted the experience of an individual who retained their position but witnessed the unexpected dismissal of their manager.

“A meeting was scheduled with my M2 and the entire team. Called FY26 Business Strategy. We were then told we are all safe but our manager who joined the call was being let go and today is her last day. Many of my peers got similar calls and entire teams were fired in bulk… on group calls,” wrote the unnamed employee in a DM.

Microsoft making no considerations while laying off?

In another post where she shares another account, it was said that Microsoft is simply letting go of people regardless of their talent and their importance to the team. “So, today of my group of 9 people at Microsoft, five of us remain. We’ve been through layoffs before, some quite large – I think my 3rd day on the job, we let go of nearly 10,000 people. This is different though. We’re not letting go of low performers or cutting a money-losing venture. These cuts make no sense and they’re letting go of a lot of good people that helped produce record numbers for us over the past few years,” said the person.

“I’m very sad at the talent we’re letting walk out the door, including the best manager I’ve ever had in my life – and I think it’s the end of the old Microsoft culture that has kept me here for more than a decade. Not liking the Amazon cutthroat ways we’re taking on and I don’t care if I get fired for saying so,” they added.

Another employee wrote, “I am profoundly saddened that over 9000 people were laid off today across multiple studios. But I’m even more disgusted that almost all of the layoffs were at or across Microsoft studios. I had a colleague who was impacted, someone who gave well over a decade of incredible effort, to be coldly dismissed. Meanwhile, shareholders get giddy, and c-suites get bonuses. This needs to end.”

Meanwhile, Microsoft continues to justify the layoffs as part of a massive restructuring process. “We continue to implement organisational changes necessary to best position the company and teams for success in a dynamic marketplace,” said a spokesperson.
