For those who endlessly scroll through Instagram, YouTube, and Reddit, this Mumbai CEO might just have the ideal job. Viraj Sheth, Co-Founder and CEO, Monk Entertainment, recently announced that the company is actively hiring for a rather unconventional role: a “doom-scroller.”
A doom scroller is someone who spends hours online, especially the kind that dominates the endless scroll on social media.
“Hiring doom-scrollers at Monk-E,” Sheth wrote in a post on LinkedIn. Under the “Role” section, he described the job and wrote, “Doom-scroll and be aware of the latest in the creator world.”
Candidates must have a serious commitment to screen time, at least six hours a day spent scrolling through Instagram and YouTube. Moreover, applicants need to provide a screenshot of their screen time habits.
Beyond the time spent online, Sheth emphasised that ideal candidates should be “obsessed with creators and creator culture,” and must “know every new creator on the block.” Given the increasing influence of Reddit in shaping online narratives, especially around internet personalities, familiarity with communities like r/InstaCelebsGossip is essential, he added.
According to Sheth, consuming this subreddit should be “like reading the morning paper.” Additional requirements include fluency in both Hindi and English, as well as proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
The post quickly gained traction, prompting a wave of reactions and discussion on the nature of the job. “Modern jobs that AI cannot take,” a user wrote. “Finally, proof that the future belongs to humans… and their ability to watch cat videos for 6 hours straight hahaha!” another user commented.
