Imagine walking into work each day feeling motivated, supported, and valued. Now imagine the opposite — dragging yourself in, your energy running on empty, your mind clouded with stress. That’s the silent crossroads where millions of employees find themselves. Workplaces can either be launchpads for growth and fulfilment or breeding grounds for burnout and emotional fatigue. According to the World Health Organisation, one in eight people worldwide lives with a mental health disorder, and an astonishing 12 billion workdays are lost each year due to depression and anxiety. The financial blow is $1 trillion annually, but the real cost is human — tired minds, broken spirits, and silent struggles.
Workplace well-being is essential, not a luxury. There are practical, actionable steps for both individuals and organisations to foster mentally healthier environments.
The 69th BFI (British Film Institute) London Film Festival, in partnership with American Express, began on Wednesday, 8 October, till Sunday, 19 October 2025. The winner of the Best Film Award will be announced on Sunday, 19 October. After a 16-year partnership, this will be the final edition of the fest with the support of headline sponsor American Express. Kristy Matheson, the London Film Festival (LFF) head, said, “For me, the priority has been to deliver to audiences and the UK industry. When I look at the results across the past two years, spending time to drill down and working with the talented programming team has been rewarding for me personally, and it’s served the festival.”
The festival opened with Daniel Craig returning as detective Benoit Blanc in Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. The event promises 12 days of red carpets, screenings, and star-studded conversations featuring Oscar winners Daniel Day-Lewis and Chloé Zhao. Craig was joined by Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, and Mila Kunis for the premiere, a darker, more gothic spin on the Knives Out franchise.
Director Rian Johnson said he and Craig began brainstorming Wake Up Dead Man right after Glass Onion screened at the festival. This year’s edition will feature films by acclaimed directors such as Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story), Philippa Lowthorpe (The Other Boleyn Girl), and Hikari (Rental Family), already being discussed as an early frontrunner for Best Picture at the 98th Academy Awards.
Mental well-being isn’t just an employee responsibility; it’s a leadership priority. Healthy workplaces build strong teams. Organisations can take action by providing mental health resources like counselling and yoga; fostering open communication; addressing toxic behaviours; offering flexible work arrangements; training managers to support stressed employees; creating peer support networks; and integrating mental health into daily workplace culture.
Work can give us a sense of purpose and belonging, but when demands are high and support is low, it becomes a source of chronic stress. Toxic work cultures, jealousy, bullying, and micromanagement can push people to burnout. Mental health is directly linked to productivity, creativity, and retention — supporting employees is not just the right thing to do, it’s essential for success.
