Private-sector employees in the United Arab Emirates will receive a paid holiday on January 1, as authorities move to ensure uniform observance of the New Year across workplaces.
The announcement confirms that all private establishments, irrespective of industry, are required to grant employees a paid day off to mark the start of the calendar year. The decision mirrors holiday provisions traditionally applicable to public-sector staff and reflects the government’s broader emphasis on balanced employment practices.
Officials indicated that the measure forms part of ongoing labour reforms aimed at enhancing employee well-being and creating consistency in workplace entitlements. Employers have been reminded to adhere to the directive, ensuring wages are not deducted for the designated holiday.
The move is expected to be welcomed by the private-sector workforce, particularly expatriates, as it reinforces parity in leave benefits and allows employees to begin the year with a scheduled pause from work.
