UK tech secretary warns AI will cost jobs

The UK’s technology secretary, Liz Kendall, has acknowledged that the increased use of artificial intelligence will lead to job losses, without specifying exact numbers.

She announced plans to train up to 10 million Britons in basic AI skills by 2030 to help workers adapt to the evolving job market.

Kendall emphasized the government’s goal to make Britain the fastest adopter of AI in the G7 and highlighted efforts to create jobs within four designated AI growth zones.

She described the upcoming online AI training programs, involving companies like Multiverse, as the largest national upskilling initiative since the 1960s.

A new “future of work unit” is being established within the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology, involving trade unions and business leaders.

The government has also allocated US$1 million from Meta to develop AI systems for defense, security, and transport, and has partnered with AI startups such as Anthropic and OpenAI for public service projects.
