A man who left behind the fast-paced grind of corporate life in a metro city has found a more intentional way of living after returning to his hometown, Udaipur, where he now runs homestays for a living.
In a Reddit post, the 27-year-old man shared how what began as a small decision to move back home gradually turned into a complete lifestyle shift.
“Switched to a slower life in Udaipur. Lower costs, more flexibility,” the caption of the post reads.
Quiet life over city rush:
According to the post, once tied to a fixed 9-to-5 routine, the man now earns through homestays.
On average, he makes around ₹1 lakh a month, though earnings can dip to ₹40,000- ₹50,000 in slower periods and rise to ₹3-4 lakh during peak tourist seasons.
He also invested in a house in Udaipur, which serves both as his residence and a key part of his income setup. Living in a tourist city has helped keep things dynamic, offering social interaction when needed while still allowing for a quieter pace of life.
The shift has significantly reduced his living costs. Basic monthly expenses now range between ₹20,000 and ₹30,000, a sharp contrast to the higher costs typically associated with metro cities.
Without daily commutes or heavy traffic, his mornings have become slower and more relaxed.
“Expenses dropped a lot. Basic living is ₹20-30k/month. Time feels more in control compared to a fixed 9-5,” he wrote.
Flexibility over financial stability:
However, the lifestyle comes with its own challenges. Income instability remains a major factor, requiring careful financial planning and savings to manage uncertain months.
“But it’s not perfect: Income is not stable, you need to plan buffers, and some months feel slow and uncertain,” he adds.
Reflecting on the change, he noted that this way of life may not suit everyone. It works best for those with simpler needs who are willing to trade financial stability for flexibility and personal time.
“It’s not a ‘perfect life’, but it feels more intentional,” he adds.
Here’s how people reacted to the post:
Reddit users reacted with a mix of curiosity and admiration to the post, with many praising the man’s decision to prioritise a slower, more intentional lifestyle over the pressures of corporate life.
One of the users commented, “That’s the dream, isn’t it?”
A second user commented, “Brave decision, I think to take this sort of decision you would have had a mature mind attached to your roots.”
“Been there, done that. It is a trade-off for sure, but if you are aware and okay with what you are trading, then nothing like it, brother,” another user commented.
