While 75 per cent of young Indians express a strong desire for artificial intelligence (AI) tools to help them navigate daily life and enhance productivity, awareness and adoption remain low, according to a Google-Kantar study.
The study, titled “Gen AI: The Daily Growth Collaborator India Desires”, surveyed over 8,000 respondents across 18 Indian cities. It found that 60 per cent of Indians are unfamiliar with AI, and only 31 per cent have tried any generative AI (Gen AI) tools.
The research highlights that Indians are seeking support in managing productivity drains, creative blocks, and communication challenges. About 72 per cent of respondents said they wish to be more productive, 77 per cent want to boost creativity, and 73 per cent are looking to communicate more effectively in their daily lives.
Among early adopters, Google’s Gemini tool showed a notable impact. Of frequent Gemini users in India, 93 per cent reported enhanced productivity, 85 per cent said it sparked creativity, and 92 per cent felt more confident at work, school, or in daily tasks. The survey also revealed that Gemini helped users manage complex decision-making (82 per cent) and supported personal skill development (81 per cent).
“The findings reveal significant untapped potential for generative AI tools in India. While excitement around AI is high, most people are still figuring out how these technologies can transform their daily routines,” the report said.
Top use cases for Gemini in India include research, summarising texts and videos, planning travel, creating presentations, academic support, and shopping assistance. On the creative side, Indians are using Gemini for idea generation, image creation, coding support, and drafting content such as social media posts and scripts.
The study also underlined generational differences in AI needs. Gen Z users are seeking help with social content and idea generation, while millennials focus on managing work-life balance, home organisation, and supporting children’s education.
Communication remains a significant challenge, with 72 per cent of respondents reporting difficulty expressing themselves effectively. Issues range from language confidence to structuring thoughts and striking the right tone in professional settings.
The report noted that these barriers often cause people to abandon aspirations such as learning new skills, starting businesses, or pursuing creative hobbies. About 74 per cent cited lack of guidance and skills as the reason for giving up on their goals.
Google said Gemini’s new features, including high-resolution video generation, interactive workspaces, and personalised assistance, are aimed at addressing these needs. Features such as Gemini Live allow users to interact via video and screen sharing for more intuitive assistance.
“AI collaboration is no longer just about speed and efficiency, it is about empowering individuals to feel more confident, creative, and connected,” the report added.
