‘Pause all H-1Bs,’ say American techies, sparking fierce online debate over US jobs

A recent post on TeamBlind is breaking down the recent layoffs situation in the tech industry. The US tech industry has already seen more than 80,000 layoffs. Corporate leaders have increasingly pointed to artificial intelligence as a contributing factor. According to the poster, in June, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said there would “be fewer people doing some of the jobs that the technology actually starts to automate.”

It also claims that Amazon’s main operating arm filed 31,817 Labor Condition Applications (LCAs) for H-1B, H-1B1, and E-3 visas in the second quarter of fiscal 2025. Including Amazon Web Services, that number climbs to 40,757, based on figures from the Labor Department’s Office of Foreign Labor Certification.

Tech layoffs in 2025

According to the recent report by Crunchbase, the total number of tech layoffs in 2025 has already exceeded 130,000 job cuts across the tech industry. This includes layoffs reported through July 2025, with major companies like Microsoft, Intel, Google, Amazon, and TCS. Some techies also claim that H-1B hiring has increased job competition, keeping wages stagnant and making it more difficult for local talent in the US to land the right roles.

‘Pause all H1Bs right away’

Netizens stated their opinion on the post. A user noted, “I am an immigrant, but to be honest, the purpose of H1B is that if there is not enough workforce then companies hire international force. Doesn’t it make sense to get rid of or reduce H1B if american born and raised citizens can’t find jobs for months/years? And don’t tell me please “H1Bs are the smartest creatures in the world, americans are not smart enough”, I have never seen an H1B so smart that they outperform americans, there are smart folks for sure and there are very nice people, but it maybe like 10% of all H1Bs that should stay as top talent and when you look at things without a bias it makes sense to prioritize citizens.”

Another added, “Indians just come to US to collect paychecks, without contributing anything meaningful. All important projects are done by other groups of people.”

“My company hired me and retains my H1B because an American cannot willingly and skillfully replace me at this moment. The moment an American who is willing, able and skilled enough to replace me, my H1B does not get extended, the process ensures that it doesn’t. As simple as that. Stop spreading lies and hate about H1Bs just because the majority of them aren’t white,” noted a netizen.

One H-1B visa holder wrote, “Almost all H1Bs have Masters degree with great grades and have proven themselves over the course of time. Of course there are the bad apples and consultancies who scam and should be cleared out. Most H1B or foreign nationals just want to lead a better life because they deserve it. If America really wants to blame everyone instead of reforming the program then it will be a wake up call to everyone and frankly talented people are better off at other places instead of coming to a hostile country who feels this about every foreign nationals.”
