‘Am I stupid to move from Europe to India?’ Reddit post sparks debate over Rs 35k frontend developer job offer

Reddit user from Sweden sparked a debate after sharing that he had received an offer to work in India as a frontend developer (Angular) with six years of experience, at a salary of ₹35,000 per month. The post ending with “Am I stupid to move from Europe to India?”, quickly gained traction among Indian tech professionals.

The user explained that he had always dreamed of living in India, which he described as a “rising superpower,” and wanted to know if the salary offered was normal for his profile, as well as how the job situation for developers in India currently looked.

The user wrote, “I’d really love to hear the real experiences from those of you working there right now.”

‘Underpaid’

Many Indian users were quick to point out that the offer was far below industry standards. One user wrote, “I made 30,000 INR per month during an internship in college, much less as a full-time employee. You’re getting underpaid. Please don’t accept this ridiculous offer. I have colleagues in my current organisation that make twice what’s been offered to you with 1-2 Years of Experience as frontend developers.”

Another added, “35k for 6 YOE in India is too low. I’d advise you to look for offers of at least Rs. 100k per month at this level of experience. 35k is what freshers from Tier 2 colleges get.”

Cost of Living Concerns

Redditors also raised concerns about the high cost of living in Indian cities compared to the offered salary. One user explained, “Yes, not a good decision to move for 35k per month. A decent 1 bhk with basic amenities in a good society in a tier 1 would cost you 25k per month. How would you survive in 10k ? Don’t accept anything below 2,00,000 per month if you wish to live a decent life here.”

Others painted an even bleaker picture, pointing to the ongoing slowdown in the tech job market. As another commenter bluntly put it: “In simple terms, Please Don’t. The market is already bad, and it’s not as good as you think it might be.”
