The use of artificial intelligence in recruitment has surged by 428.7% since 2023, according to a new report, indicating hiring managers’ growing reliance on the technology.
Findings from iHire’s 2025 State of Online Recruiting Report revealed that 25.9% of employers are currently using AI in their recruitment efforts.
This is significantly higher than the 14.7% in 2024, and 4.9% in 2023.
According to the report, the most popular AI use cases include:
- Writing job ads (73%)
- Composing messages, such as emails and texts, to candidates (68.6%)
- Sending messages to candidates (49.6%)
- Screening CVs (32.1%)
Using AI to address ghosting
Not only are recruiters using AI in their workflows, but they are also expecting job boards to start adopting the technology to address hiring issues, the report revealed.
Among these problems is ghosting, where 50% of employers said they are frustrated by candidates not responding to outreach or showing up for interviews.
Jobseekers are also frustrated with this, as 59% of them said not hearing back from employers was a “top job search challenge.”
Nearly a third (31.8%) of employers said they valued AI tools on job boards that can facilitate sending messages to candidates.
Others said they also value AI tools that can help them compose messages to candidates (30.2%), as well as those that can screen CVs (27%).
“AI tools, including those offered by job boards and recruiting platforms, as well as generative AI solutions, hold potential to help close that communications gap,” the report read.
With more employers adopting AI tools, the report predicts that the use of AI tools to streamline communications will rise.
“And, when employers are responsive to candidates, candidates are more likely to reciprocate the actions, therefore decreasing instances of ghosting,” the report read.
Job boards remain relevant
Job boards remain one of the top avenues connecting employers with jobseekers, with 68.6% of the respondents saying they use these platforms for all or most of their hiring.
Nearly a third (31.9%) also said their reliance on job boards will likely increase in the coming year.
Among the top features that employers said job boards should have are:
- Messaging tool to communicate with candidates, such as email (47.1%) and texts (34.6%)
- Prescreening questions (44.6%)
- Skills assessment (28.4%)
- Interview scheduling features (26.3%)
- Talent pipelining capabilities (25.5%)
Meanwhile, other strategies they use to recruit talent amid skills gap concerns are:
- Hiring from within or promoting a current employee (42.3%)
- Tapping into their talent pipeline (36.9%)
- Rehiring former staff or boomerang employees (30.8%)
- Upskilling or reskilling existing staff (27.8%)
