Amid the continuing wave of job cuts across industries, a recently laid-off employee shared his frustration on Reddit after discovering that an “Organisational alignment update” meeting was, in reality, a layoff announcement.
“It was a layoff”
In his post, the reddditor recalled how he had questioned the purpose of the meeting days earlier, suspecting it might be linked to job cuts. “Well, I went to the meeting and indeed, it was a layoff,” he wrote.
He described logging into the call alongside three colleagues, only to have his boss’s boss introduce a human resources representative. “At that moment I literally thought, ‘Oh crap,’ and sure enough, it was someone from HR,” the post read.
Department merger
The Redditor said a day after the meeting, staff were informed by email that their department would be merged with another. As a result, their positions were eliminated with immediate effect. Some colleagues, however, were told their roles would continue until 31 December, which the poster described as an uneven and unfair approach.
“I felt it was a bit cruel that we got the invite so far in advance six days is a lot,” the redditor remarked, stressing on how the waiting period added to their anxiety.
Silence from management
The Redditor has also criticised his manager’s behaviour in the lead-up to the meeting. According to the post, regular group meetings and one-to-one sessions were abruptly cancelled, and questions about the upcoming “alignment update” went unanswered. “My boss’s silence wasn’t good he just ghosted us,” the employee said.
Meanwhile, despite the disappointment, the Reddit user expressed determination to move forward. “I’m sad, but I’ll give myself a week and a half to rest and recharge before I start applying again,” he wrote, thanking fellow users for their encouragement.
