YouTube is undergoing one of its biggest internal restructurings yet as it prepares for a new era driven by artificial intelligence. The company has announced a voluntary exit programme for employees in the US, coinciding with a strategic reorganisation aimed at positioning YouTube to leverage AI across its platform.
The restructuring, set to take effect on 5 November, will introduce three distinct product divisions that will report directly to CEO Neal Mohan — Viewer Products, Creator and Community Products, and Subscription Products. Each unit will focus on enhancing user experience, empowering creators through generative AI tools, and accelerating growth in subscriptions such as YouTube Premium and YouTube TV.
While YouTube emphasised that no layoffs are part of the plan, the company acknowledged that some employees may be seeking new opportunities. The voluntary buyout programme gives eligible staff the option to leave with a severance package. The initiative reflects a broader industry trend, as major tech firms continue reshaping their workforces to align with AI-driven growth strategies.
Mohan outlined that YouTube’s future lies in integrating AI to transform how content is created, discovered, and consumed. The new structure aims to streamline decision-making, deepen expertise in key areas, and enhance collaboration across product teams.
The announcement comes as parent company Alphabet reported record quarterly earnings, surpassing $100 billion for the first time. The timing also aligns with a wave of workforce changes across the tech sector, with companies such as Amazon and Google reorganising to sharpen their focus on artificial intelligence.
For YouTube, the reorganisation marks both a strategic reset and a signal of its evolving priorities — balancing innovation with workforce flexibility as it enters its next growth phase.
