An MBA graduate has claimed that he was asked to leave Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) within just five days of joining in a Reddit post on r/IndianWorkplace.
The user, who identified himself as a 2025 MBA graduate in Finance and Business Analytics, said he was thrilled to receive his joining letter from TCS after months of waiting and preparation. “All my best friends were already in TCS, and I was too excited to join,” he said in his post titled “Asked to leave TCS within 5 days of joining”.
The man, in his post, claimed that he had successfully completed the company’s Initial Learning Programme (ILP) and was set to move to the bench on Monday. However, just before that, he said he was informed by HR that his background check (BGC) had come back negative.
Explaining the situation, the man said his previous employer had gone bankrupt and shut down, leaving no HR team or formal records behind. The company had paid him in cash – Rs 30,000 per month – without bank proof, leaving him without adequate documentation except a relieving letter and three months’ payslips.
Despite offering to provide additional proof and having his former managing director and manager ready to vouch for him, the man claimed that TCS HR refused to consider any explanations. “The only answer he needed was either resignation or termination,” he said.
Devastated, the man said he had travelled over 240 km multiple times between exams and interviews for the job, only to see his efforts “turn to nothing.”
Now, he said, his career prospects have dimmed: “While searching for a job, the maximum people are ready to pay merely Rs 20,000 without experience. Some companies reject me for a three-year gap after my UG. I feel stuck in an endless loop of either settling for peanuts or taking a telecaller job.”
He concluded his post seeking advice from others, wondering whether to pursue another course with placement support or accept a low-paying role to stay employed.
Social media users empathised with the graduate’s situation and criticised companies for being inflexible about background checks despite legitimate circumstances. Several users urged him not to lose hope and to document his case thoroughly in case he reapplies elsewhere.
India Today has reached out to TCS for a statement on the Reddit user’s allegations. This article will be updated once they respond.
