Pune is feeling the direct impact of global slowdown and rising protectionism in Western countries, with leading IT companies resorting to layoffs. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has terminated the services of 365 employees in its Pune operations over the past few days, a part of a larger nationwide downsizing.
Three of the affected employees have lodged complaints with the Labour Commissioner, demanding reinstatement. Hearings are underway. Senior TCS officials have indicated that more than 12,000 employees across India will be laid off.
Once beneficiaries of globalisation, Indian IT firms are now facing setbacks as Western nations adopt protectionist policies. The sector, once popular for job creation and attractive salaries, is now struggling amidst recessionary winds.
Many employees have already lost jobs in recent months. Workers have alleged that proper rules were not followed during the layoff and that adequate compensation has not been provided. Some female employees claimed that they were forced to resign during maternity leave.
At a hearing on November 18, the Labour Commissioner summoned the TCS’s HR head who avoided immediate explanation while stating that written replies would be submitted later. This approach has caused concern among IT employees in Pune. Against the backdrop of economic uncertainty, workers are struggling for job security.
Labour unions have also raised the issue, warning companies to follow rules and regulations and provide fair compensation. The large-scale layoffs across the country, alleged violation of rules and employees’ attempts to seek justice have created a worrying social and economic climate in the IT sector.
The Pune episode highlights the urgent need for measures to balance company interests with employee welfare.
