Anthropic Chief Scientist Jared Kaplan warns AI could replace most white-collar jobs within 3 years: Here’s why

Artificial intelligence is advancing at a pace that few people have only expected, and several experts now warn that major changes to white-collar jobs could arrive much sooner than anticipated.

According to Anthropic chief scientist Jared Kaplan, artificial intelligence is rapidly evolving into a system capable of handling not just simple office tasks but also complex reasoning-analysis, and software development roles which are usually performed by trained professionals. He said this during an interview with The Guardian.

AI Excels at Academic and Office Tasks

One important observation shared by AI scientists is that current models are already strong enough to outperform students on many types of academic work. Essay writing, math problems, research tasks, and structured assignments can now be handled effortlessly by modern AI systems.

This progress matters because the same skill is used in schoolwork form the foundation of countless office jobs. Several tasks like drafting reports, analyzing data, preparing presentations, writing emails, or reviewing documents all rely on patterns that AI can now learn and replicate. In many cases, these models work faster, require no breaks, and can process huge amounts of information in seconds.

Rise of AGI That Can Build and Improve Itself

Interestingly, a more bigger shift may come from AI’s growing ability to create and train other AI systems. Since the current advances in coding assistants and autonomous software agents show that machines can already generate long chains of reasoning, fix errors, and keep improving their output with minimal human guidance.

Researchers also believe that the late 2020s will see a turning point, when AI begins contributing directly to its own development. If this happens, progress could accelerate far beyond today’s pace. While this opens the door to rapid innovation, it also raises serious questions about oversight, safety, and long-term control.

Fewer Human-Driven Office Jobs in Future

If AI continues to advance at its current speed, many white-collar roles once considered stable and secure will disappear or be reshaped.

Moreover, routine administrative work, basic analysis, coding, content creation, and even strategic planning could be handled by AI systems which will be more reliable than human workers.

Additionally, this shift will force businesses to change the nature of employment. Since people may need to move toward jobs that rely on human qualities such as empathy, creativity, relationship-building, and ethical judgment areas where machines still struggle, according to Jared Kaplan.

The Road Ahead

The rapid acceleration of AI technology brings both excitement and concern with it. Although artificial intelligence aims to bring efficiency and innovation, it also needs careful oversight and thoughtful public debates. Lastly decisions made in the coming years will not only impact the future of work but also the balance between humans and the artificial intelligent systems.
