Pune IT Employee Fired After Cancer Diagnosis; Begins Hunger Strike Seeking Justice

A Facility Manager from an IT company in Pune’s Yerawada has launched a hunger strike after reportedly being dismissed while undergoing cancer treatment. The incident has triggered widespread discussions on employee rights, ethical workplace practices, and job security in the IT sector.

Santosh Patole, who served as a Facility Manager at multinational firm SLB for eight years, alleges he was removed from service shortly after being diagnosed with thyroid cancer during the company’s annual health check-up in April. With over 20 years of professional experience, Patole says the diagnosis required immediate surgery and medical care, forcing him to take leave through May and June.

According to Patole, his medical expenses were initially covered by the company until June. Doctors cleared him to resume duties on July 1. However, on July 23, before he could fully return to work, Patole received a termination letter. He claims the sudden removal not only stripped him of his job but also left him without financial assistance for ongoing cancer treatment.

Patole further alleges that the company justified the termination by accusing him of a decision that could have caused a project loss amounting to ₹2.5–3 crore. He asserts the accusation is baseless as the project in question was never executed. He says his explanations were dismissed, leaving him with no opportunity to present his side.

Since losing his job, Patole states that the medical coverage earlier provided by the company has been withdrawn, significantly escalating his treatment costs and emotional stress. Facing mounting financial pressure, Patole has now taken to a hunger strike outside the company’s Pune office, demanding reinstatement and restoration of medical support.

The case has gained attention on social media and among labour rights groups, who are calling for a thorough inquiry into the company’s actions. Meanwhile, Patole continues his protest, urging authorities to intervene and ensure fair treatment for employees battling critical illnesses.
