Fewer Canadian companies are planning to hire new employees in 2026

If you’re looking for a new job in 2026, it may be a bumpy start to the new year.

A new Express Employment Professionals-Harris Poll survey shows that Canadian businesses are expecting to face several hiring challenges in the coming months.

This includes fewer companies planning on increasing headcount compared to the beginning of the two previous years.

“Less than half of companies (44 per cent) plan to increase headcount in the first half of 2026; down from 51 per cent in the first half of last year and 49 per cent in the first half of 2024,” said Express Employment Professionals, a staffing agency, in a release.

“Almost as many (42 per cent) plan to keep their headcount about the same, while 10 per cent plan to decrease their numbers.”

The survey also revealed that Canadian businesses planning on reducing the number of employees point to cost reduction as the number one reason.

Aligning with changes to government policies, a decline in demand at the company, and an increased use of automation and AI were other reasons why surveyed hiring decision-makers planned on lowering employee headcount next year.

Over 20 per cent of the 504 respondents said they will not replace employees who leave.

“As we move into 2026, companies that thrive will be those that invest in people and adaptability,” said Bob Funk Jr., CEO, President and Chairman of Express Employment International, in a statement. “Technology will continue to transform how we work, but human expertise and creativity remain irreplaceable.

“Closing skill gaps isn’t just a hiring challenge; it’s a strategic opportunity for long-term growth.”
