Indian Railways has approved the rollout of a revised identity card system for its regular workforce and contract service providers. The decision follows an internal review by the Railway Board and aims to bring uniformity and standardisation across the national transporter’s vast network.
The move builds on earlier plans announced in mid-2025 to introduce a new format of identity cards. Those plans were temporarily paused after the Board decided to reassess certain design and technical elements. With the review now complete, the Railways has cleared updated formats for implementation across all zones, production units, and training institutes.
Under the revised framework, separate identity card designs have been finalised for railway employees and for personnel engaged through contract service providers. These formats are expected to ensure clearer identification, improved consistency, and easier verification across operational locations. Alongside the card design, the Railways has also finalised a standardised method for generating identity card numbers for its employees, strengthening system-wide alignment.
While the card formats have been updated, there will be no change in the lanyards used with the identity cards. Physical sample cards and lanyards that were circulated earlier will continue to serve as reference material for implementation.
All zonal railways, production units, and centralised training institutes have been instructed to begin the process of issuing the new identity cards in line with the revised specifications. The emphasis is on ensuring a common look and structure across the organisation, regardless of region or function.
The order has received formal approval from the competent authority, paving the way for phased adoption across Indian Railways. The initiative reflects a broader push towards administrative consistency and streamlined identity management within one of the world’s largest employers.
