A strange new kind of work platform is quietly gaining attention online, and it turns the usual idea of artificial intelligence on its head. Instead of humans using AI to get things done, AI agents are now hiring humans to do real-world tasks.
The website is called RentAHuman, and it was launched by Alexander Liteplo, a crypto engineer at UMA Protocol. The idea is simple, but unsettling: if an AI agent needs something done in the physical world, it can “rent” a person to do it.
Liteplo describes the platform as a way for AI agents to offload tasks they cannot perform themselves. These range from basic errands and deliveries to attending meetings, picking up groceries, or handling location-based requests. In other words, things that still require a human body.
At its core, RentAHuman works like a marketplace. Humans can sign up, browse available tasks, set their own rates, and choose jobs based on where they are and what they are comfortable doing. The site jokingly calls itself a “meatplace,” leaning into the idea that humans are now the physical layer supporting digital agents.
Some tasks pay just a few dollars, while others go up to around $69. At the time of writing, more than 81,000 humans had signed up to take jobs, compared to just 81 AI agents actually using the platform. That imbalance says a lot about where curiosity currently lies.
Behind the scenes, the site itself was reportedly built using what Liteplo calls “vibe coding,” with multiple AI agents based on Claude working in loops until the code was complete. It’s AI helping build a system where AI can then hire humans, which adds another layer to the strangeness.
Despite its crypto-adjacent origins, Liteplo has said the platform will not launch its own cryptocurrency token. He explained on a podcast that issuing a token would be stressful and could put users’ money at risk, a notable decision in a space where tokens are often the default.
RentAHuman is part of a growing wave of AI-first experiments on the internet. Recently, platforms designed primarily for AI users rather than humans have started popping up, some of them quickly running into security and privacy problems. RentAHuman appears more polished, but it still raises uncomfortable questions.
The platform forces a rethink of how work, agency, and technology intersect. When an AI assistant can decide it needs a person to carry out a task, set a price, and hire one instantly, the traditional hierarchy between humans and machines starts to blur.
For now, RentAHuman feels more like a provocation than a mass-market product. But it offers a glimpse into a future where AI doesn’t just help humans work, it manages them. Whether that future is clever, creepy, or both is still very much up for debate.
